Setting Out in the Rain

The Golden Gate Bridge refracted in rain drops...

This morning I set out to take a walk.  I knew it was the only time during the day I had, but the weather wasn’t exactly cooperating.  It was raining, a lot.  So I put my MP3 player in a ziploc bag and headed out with my rain gear on.  I was only walking for 25 minutes, and stayed close so I could come back if the weather took a turn for the worst.  Funny thing happened: the weather broke into sunshine about halfway through my walk.

Set out, even when conditions aren’t optimal.

I didn’t want to walk in the rain, but I made a commitment to myself.  I knew I was going to get wet, so I took some precautions.  Then, I was unexpectedly rewarded with warm sunshine.  Have you ever set out to do something when the timing or circumstances weren’t “right”?  People wait to have children until they’re “ready”, to find out they weren’t really as prepared as they thought.   An entrepreneur sets out to start business in a down economy, all the while he is inundated with well meaning individuals warning of a huge mistake.  Then, he succeeds - wildly.  A busy professional carves out time to take care of her health, amid a schedule that sees them more in a hotel than in her own home. She makes time anyway.

It might never be easy or the “right” time.

If we always waited to do things at the “right” time, not much would get accomplished.  Sure it’s a good idea to listen to those that care (and sometimes know better than us) and warn us of impending danger or pitfalls, but ultimately we make our own decisions.   It’s wise to go into any venture with eyes wide open.  Just make sure waiting for a clear path isn’t holding you back from taking action.
